Preserved moss care guide

Preserved reindeer, mood and sheet moss

Preserved moss is real moss that has been treated with a glycerin-based solution, so it stays soft and green without water, soil or light. It's what we use for moss walls, logo walls and moss art in spaces where live plants can't grow.

Caring for it mostly means knowing what not to do.

How to care for preserved moss

Never water or mist preserved moss. Water washes out the preservative and color, and can cause mold or dye bleeding onto walls.

Preserved moss needs no light, so it works in windowless rooms, but direct sun fades the color over time. Keep it away from bright windows, and away from heater and AC vents, which dry it out.

Moss draws moisture from the air. Between 40% and 60% humidity keeps it soft and springy. Below about 30% it can become crispy and shed; it will usually soften again once humidity returns. Above 70% it may sweat preservative.

To clean, dust gently with a soft feather duster, or blow it off with a hair dryer on the cool setting. Don't touch it more than necessary, because hand oils dull it.

Common preserved moss problems

Most issues are about light and humidity.

  • Dry, crispy or shedding: low humidity. Raise humidity or move it away from vents.
  • Faded or yellow color: direct sun.
  • Damp, sticky or bleeding color: too much humidity, or it was watered.
  • Gaps or loose pieces: a professional can re-attach or replace sections.
