Monstera care sheet

Monstera deliciosa · Easy care · Not pet-safe

Big split leaves that read as instantly tropical. Grows fast and forgives the odd missed watering.

LightBright, indirect light. Tolerates medium light, but leaves won't split in low light.
WaterWhen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil are dry: about every 7 to 10 days in summer, every 2 to 3 weeks in winter.
Temperature65°F to 85°F. Keep above 55°F.
Humidity40% to 60% is ideal. Average home air is fine.
SoilChunky aroid mix: potting soil, orchid bark and perlite.
FertilizerBalanced liquid fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer.
SupportA moss pole or stake once it starts to lean.
PetsToxic to cats and dogs if chewed.

Where to water it

Water the soil

Pour water slowly onto the soil around the base, not over the leaves, until it runs out of the drainage holes. Empty the saucer after 15 minutes.

When: When the top 2 inches of soil are dry.

Where to put it

A few feet back from an east or west window. Too little light and new leaves come in without splits.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Watering on a schedule instead of checking the soil
  • Leaving it in a dark corner, which stops leaf splits
  • No moss pole, so it sprawls sideways

If something looks wrong

  • Yellow leaves: overwatering, especially if lower leaves yellow first. Let the soil dry further between waterings.
  • Brown, crispy edges: dry air or underwatering.
  • Brown spots with a yellow halo: root rot or a bacterial infection from wet soil. Check the roots and cut away anything mushy.
  • No splits on new leaves: too little light, or the plant is still young. Monsteras usually start splitting at 2 to 3 years old.
  • Leaning or leggy: reaching for light. Move it brighter and add a moss pole.
