African Violet care sheet
Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia · Moderate care · Pet-safe

Small, fuzzy-leaved plant that flowers almost all year in purple, pink and white.
| Light | Bright, indirect light, or 12 hours under grow lights. |
|---|---|
| Water | From the bottom, with room-temperature water, when the top feels dry. |
| Temperature | 65°F to 80°F. Keep above 60°F. |
| Humidity | 40% to 60%. |
| Soil | Light African violet mix. |
| Pot | Small and shallow. Violets bloom best slightly root-bound. |
| Fertilizer | African violet fertilizer at quarter strength with most waterings. |
| Pets | Non-toxic to cats and dogs. |
Where to water it
Fill the saucer and let the plant drink from the bottom for about 30 minutes, then tip out what is left. Keep water off the fuzzy leaves.
When: When the top of the soil feels dry to the touch.
Where to put it
A bright windowsill out of direct sun, such as an east window.
Avoid these mistakes
- Getting water on the leaves, which leaves spots
- Cold water
- Pots that are too big
If something looks wrong
- No flowers: not enough light, a pot that's too big, or not enough fertilizer.
- Pale spots or rings on leaves: cold water or water left on the leaves.
- Drooping, limp leaves: either very dry or root rot from too much water. Check the soil.
- Yellow bottom leaves: normal aging, or too much direct sun. Remove them.
- Bleached or sunburned leaves: direct sun.
