Snake Plant care sheet
Dracaena trifasciata · Easy care · Not pet-safe
Upright, architectural leaves that cope with almost anything, including low light and neglect.
| Light | Bright, indirect light is best. Tolerates low light and some direct sun. |
|---|---|
| Water | When the soil is completely dry: every 2 to 3 weeks in summer, every 4 to 6 weeks in winter. |
| Temperature | 60°F to 85°F. Keep above 50°F. |
| Humidity | Normal indoor air is fine. No misting needed. |
| Soil | Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. |
| Fertilizer | Half-strength houseplant food once a month in spring and summer only. |
| Repotting | Every 2 to 3 years, in spring, one pot size up. |
| Pets | Mildly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. |
Where to water it
Pour water slowly onto the soil around the base, not over the leaves, until it runs out of the drainage holes. Empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
When: When the soil is completely dry, usually every 2 to 3 weeks.
Where to put it
Anywhere from a dim hallway to a sunny window. It grows faster in brighter light.
Avoid these mistakes
- Overwatering, the main way snake plants die
- Pouring water into the center of the leaves, which causes rot
- A pot with no drainage hole
If something looks wrong
- Yellow, soft or mushy leaves: overwatering or root rot. Stop watering and check the roots.
- Root rot: unpot the plant, cut off every brown or mushy root, let the plant dry for a day, and repot in fresh, dry cactus mix. If only leaves are healthy, propagate them and discard the base.
- Leaves falling over or drooping: usually overwatering, sometimes too little light or a pot that's too light. Cut damaged leaves, water less, move it brighter, and repot into terracotta if it's top-heavy.
- Wrinkled or curling leaves: thirst. Water deeply once, then return to the normal schedule.
- Brown tips: uneven watering or fertilizer salts. Trim them and water deeply but less often.
