Pothos care sheet
Epipremnum aureum · Easy care · Not pet-safe
Trailing vines for shelves, high cabinets and hanging planters. Very hard to kill.
| Light | Medium to bright, indirect light. Tolerates low light and office lighting. |
|---|---|
| Water | When the top 1 to 2 inches are dry, usually every 7 to 10 days. |
| Temperature | 65°F to 85°F. Keep above 55°F. |
| Humidity | Average indoor air is fine. |
| Soil | Any well-draining potting mix. |
| Fertilizer | Monthly in spring and summer at half strength. |
| Pruning | Trim long vines anytime to keep it full. |
| Pets | Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. |
Where to water it
Pour water slowly onto the soil around the base, not over the leaves, until it runs out of the drainage holes. Empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
When: When the top inch of soil is dry, or the leaves start to soften.
Where to put it
On shelves or in hanging planters, anywhere out of hot direct sun. Variegated types need more light.
Avoid these mistakes
- Letting vines get leggy instead of trimming them
- Soggy soil
- Low light for variegated varieties
If something looks wrong
- Yellow leaves: overwatering, or old leaves at the base dying back naturally.
- Brown, crispy leaves: underwatering or very dry air.
- Brown, mushy stems at the soil: root rot. Take healthy cuttings and restart.
- Leggy vines with small leaves: too little light. Move it brighter and trim it back.
- Lost variegation: too little light. New leaves regain color in brighter light.
