Ponytail Palm care sheet
Beaucarnea recurvata · Easy care · Pet-safe
A bulbous trunk topped with a fountain of thin leaves. Not a true palm, and very forgiving.
| Light | Bright light, with some direct sun. |
|---|---|
| Water | When the soil is almost completely dry, about every 2 to 4 weeks. |
| Temperature | 60°F to 85°F. Tolerates brief dips near freezing. |
| Humidity | Low. Dry indoor air is fine. |
| Soil | Cactus or succulent mix. |
| Pot | Shallow, wide and heavy, like terracotta, with drainage. |
| Fertilizer | 2 or 3 times in spring and summer. |
| Pets | Non-toxic to cats and dogs. |
Where to water it
Pour water slowly onto the soil around the base, not over the leaves, until it runs out of the drainage holes. Empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
When: When the soil is completely dry. Its swollen trunk stores water.
Where to put it
A bright, sunny window.
Avoid these mistakes
- Watering like a tropical plant
- Low light
- Oversized pots
If something looks wrong
- Brown leaf tips: normal with age, dry air or underwatering. Trim with scissors.
- Yellow leaves and a soft trunk: overwatering and rot.
- Leaning or stretching: not enough light.
- Wrinkled trunk: thirsty. Water deeply.
- Pests: occasionally spider mites, mealybugs or scale.
