Fiddle Leaf Fig care sheet
Ficus lyrata · Fussy care · Not pet-safe
The designer favorite: a sculptural tree with violin-shaped leaves. Beautiful, and famously picky.
| Light | Very bright light, ideally a few hours of gentle direct sun. |
|---|---|
| Water | When the top 2 inches are dry, usually every 7 to 10 days. Water deeply. |
| Temperature | 65°F to 85°F. Keep above 60°F and away from drafts. |
| Humidity | 30% to 65%. Average homes are fine. |
| Soil | Fast-draining indoor plant mix with bark or perlite. |
| Fertilizer | Monthly in spring and summer. |
| Location | Pick a spot and leave it there. It hates being moved. |
| Pets | Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. |
Where to water it
Pour water slowly onto the soil around the base, not over the leaves, until it runs out of the drainage holes. Empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
When: When the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Water deeply, then let it drain.
Where to put it
Right beside your brightest window. Do not move it often, because it drops leaves when its light changes.
Avoid these mistakes
- Moving it around the room
- Cold drafts from doors or AC vents
- Overwatering, which shows as brown spots
If something looks wrong
- Dark brown spots starting in the middle or bottom of the leaf, often with yellowing: overwatering and root rot. Check the roots and let the soil dry further.
- Crispy, light brown edges: underwatering or dry air.
- Beige or bleached patches: sunburn from sudden direct sun.
- Tiny red or brown dots on new leaves: edema from uneven watering. Harmless, and it fades.
- Leaves falling off: a move, a cold draft, or overwatering. Keep it in one spot and stabilize watering.
