Where to water it

Water the soil

Pour water slowly onto the soil around the base, not over the leaves, until it runs out of the drainage holes. Empty the saucer after 15 minutes.

When: When the top half of the soil is dry.

Where to put it

Medium light in offices and lobbies. It handles lower light but grows slowly there.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Overwatering
  • Fluoride in tap water, which browns tips
  • Cold drafts

If something looks wrong

  • Brown tips: fluoride or salts in tap water, dry soil or too much fertilizer. Trim with scissors following the leaf's shape, and switch to filtered water.
  • Yellow lower leaves dropping: normal, a few at a time. Many at once means overwatering.
  • Leaves turning white or pale: too much direct sun, or check under the leaves for mealybugs and spider mites.
  • Soft, mushy cane base: root rot. Cut off healthy tops, root them, and discard the base.
  • Drooping leaves: thirst or cold.
