Bromeliad care sheet
Guzmania · Easy care · Pet-safe
A bright, long-lasting bloom that lasts for months. It drinks through the cup in its center, not its roots.
| Light | Medium to bright, indirect light. |
|---|---|
| Water | Keep the center cup about a quarter full. Refresh it weekly. |
| Soil | Water lightly when the mix is dry, about every 2 weeks. |
| Temperature | 60°F to 85°F. |
| Humidity | 40% to 60%. |
| Potting mix | Orchid bark or a loose bromeliad mix. |
| Fertilizer | Very little: quarter strength once a month in summer. |
| Pets | Non-toxic to cats and dogs. |
Where to water it
Keep the cup in the middle of the leaves about a quarter full of water, and flush it out with fresh water once a week. Only lightly dampen the soil.
When: Refresh the water in the center cup once a week. The soil only needs a light drink every 2 weeks.
Where to put it
Bright, indirect light on desks and reception counters.
Avoid these mistakes
- Watering only the soil
- Letting water in the cup go stale
- Expecting the same rosette to bloom twice; it makes pups instead
If something looks wrong
- Brown, mushy center: rot from stagnant water or soggy mix. Empty the cup and let the mix dry.
- Brown leaf tips: dry air, or minerals in tap water. Use filtered or rain water.
- Fading bloom: normal after 3 to 6 months.
- Faded leaf color: too little light.
- Bleached patches: too much direct sun.
